History and Nature Collide at Alcatraz
Alcatraz Island has been the backdrop to much more than the infamous maximum security prison of television and film. A Civil War-era fortress and home to the 1964 and 1967 American Indian, Red Power movements, the colorful history of Alcatraz continues to capture America's attention today as ever. Alcatraz Island is also a sanctuary for colonial seabirds such as cormorants and pigeon guillemots, as well as water birds like the snowy egret and black-crowned night heron. Each year bird-enthusiasts from across the nation gather to witness the nesting habits of these incredible creatures. Visit from late winter to early summer for a completely different look at Alcatraz Island.
San Francisco Alcatraz Tour Planning
Planning ahead is imperative when visiting Alcatraz. Access to the island is provided solely through a ferry operated by Alcatraz Cruises, LLC, located just south east of Fisherman's Wharf at The Embarcadero near Pier 33. The ferry generally sells out of tickets a week in advance, and Pier 33 provides no open parking, so it is highly recommended to reserve space early and utilize public transportation. The Muni F line is an ideal option, running right past the ferry terminal and along through Fisherman's Wharf. Please visit the San Francisco Municipal Railway website for more information.
